As Christians and Jews, we feel deep solidarity with the Muslim community in reaction to the horrific massacre of 49 innocent Muslims in Christchurch New Zealand while at prayer this morning in two mosques.

These barbaric killings—and those at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh or at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston in 2015—demonstrate that hatred targeted at one community is hatred targeted at all communities. We must protect freedom of worship for those of all faiths and find ways to reach out to one another to build bridges of understanding and friendship between communities of all faiths and none. Only by challenging hatred and speaking out against those who seek to divide us will we ever overcome this inhumanity.
