Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is commemorated on 27th January each year throughout the world. The Council of Christians and Jews works with Churches Together in Britain and Ireland to produce a number of resources for Christian clergy to use with their congregations to commemorate the event. Each year HMD has a theme - the theme for 2010 was The Legacy of Hope.

This educational film about the Holocaust was produced by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust. For more information about CCJ's role in combating antisemitism, watch our short film.

Why is HMD on the 27th January?

The 27th of January was chosen as it is the anniversary of the day in 1945 on which the Soviet Army liberated the largest Nazi concentration camp - Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Can I use CCJ's resources to remember the victims of the Holocaust at other times of year?

At the Council of Christians and Jews we encourage people to keep the Holocaust in their thoughts, so that together we can continue to work against antisemitism and victimisation. Please feel free to use our resources and those of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust throughout the year.

What resources are available for use?

In 2010, CCJ produced a PowerPoint Presentation entitled The Legacy of Hope, a pack of materials for use in Christian services and gatherings, a variety of prayers to commemorate the Holocaust and guidelines to assist Christian ministers in dealing with difficult biblical passages (produced in conjunction with the Church of England).
