Real Dialogue begins with Relationship

Musical and gastronomical treats were on the menu at Oxford CCJ’s annual Soiree, as well as wonderful musical entertainment set against a backdrop of the dreamy view of the famous spires of one Europe’s most beautiful cities.

The unmissable evening was hosted by Branch Chairman Emeritus, Wendy, and Brian Fidler at their Oxford home, and guests enjoyed a delicious buffet of fresh poached salmon and salads, an array of hot and cold vegetarian dishes, deliciously wicked desserts and a selection of good wine – all prepared by the hard-working committee.

QuintessentialAs well as the food, the Soirees are also renowned for the calibre of entertainment from musicians and vocalists - including Glyndebourne baritones and national sopranos. This year was no exception thanks to the very talented Quintessential, a wind ensemble of five dynamic instrumentalists who all met whilst at Oxford University and today pursue careers in medicine, research, PR, publishing and IT. The range of music played ranged from Baroque and Romantic to 20th Century. However Quintessential’s offering of Beethoven Bossanova hit the spot between main course and dessert! A most irreverent take on Beethoven’s Fifth symphony, it was both entertaining for the listeners and demonstrated the musicians’ talent and diversity.

As this was the CCJ’s 70th Year (Oxford, like Manchester CCJ, was founded in 1942 as one of the first branches in the country), CCJ member, Alexander Massey, composed a stunning piece for the occasion. Mellow phrases and rhythm
birthday cakeic sequences combined to provide a haunting and beautiful melody delivered by Massey himself - a bass baritone. He was ably accompanied on the grand piano by the OxfordShir Jewish Community Choir Director, John Dunston. Needless to say there was a birthday cake too.

But the third highlight of the evening makes Oxford CCJ stand out from so many other interfaith groups: the relationships, - relationships in which dialogue and respect flourish. Plenty of time to talk and to get to know one another, to talk about difference, joys, reflections on past events and the richness we feel as we meet monthly together.

Oxford CCJ will have a Summer recess until September 23rd, when at 2 pm we will join CCJ Birmingham at the Coughton Court Literary Festival with a special seminar led by Booker Prize nomination, Rachel Seiffert.

We hope for good weather, we guarantee a great afternoon!
