CCJ advises caution on General Synod motion

Photo:Jane Mingay
"The proposed private members motion due to be debated at the York meeting of the General Synod is of concern to the Council of Christians and Jews.
"A number of CCJ members with a concern for peace between Israel and Palestine have been present at EAPPI meetings where the Ecumenical Accompaniers have returned from their brief time in the Palestinian Territories and given their talks and presentations. Comments received by the CCJ have reported that unfortunately the speeches and presentations can appear to be anti-Israel and run the risk of leading to anti-Jewish sentiment.
"This is a worrying situation for those of us dedicated to Jewish/Christian relations and the fight against antisemitism.
"CCJ is troubled by some of the actions and behaviour that goes on around the settlements and at the crossings. This concern is shared by both Jewish and Christian members of CCJ. The work of the Ecumenical Accompaniers to document incidents of violence and abuse is well understood. However CCJ fears that the EAPPI programme, rather than being a conduit for understanding, peace and reconciliation, can portray a picture of an intolerant Israeli society with little sympathy towards the plight of the Palestinians, and ignore the deep desire of many ordinary Israelis for a just resolution to the conflict and wish for the Palestinians to their own state and living in peace a security with their neighbours including Israel.
"Additionally, frustration with the ongoing slowness in peace negotiations between Israel and Palestine can so often lead to anger and violence against Jews in the United Kingdom.
"It is for these reasons that the CCJ is hopes that the General Synod does not support the motion as it now stands."
